About Carla at Carnegie

In 2005, Carla Harris decided to use her vocal talents to raise money to provide academic and financial support for students of color by performing a benefit concert at Carnegie Hall. A group of wonderful singers from the Voices of the Spirit choir were personally selected by conductor and maestro Wavel Mark Howell to accompany Carla for the first evening of Hallelujah Praise and the Mark Howell Singers were born. The combination of the two entities, led by David Ushery as host for the evening, was magical. In 2006 and 2010 Carla and the Mark Howell singers performed their second and third evenings of Hallelujah Praise to sold-out audiences at Carnegie. In 2012, a fourth evening of Unceasing Praise was performed for yet another sold-out audience.

Proceeds from the concerts in 2005 and 2006 were used to develop and provide continuing support of a science and math program for the children of St. Charles Borromeo School in Harlem, New York, as well as provide scholarships for students who desired to attend her alma mater, Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville, Florida. All scholarship recipients are students who have excelled academically but may be financially challenged. While continuing to support St. Charles and Bishop Kenny, A Better Chance, Inc. was included as a recipient organization in 2010. 100% of the proceeds from each concert is remitted to these three organizations. Thanks to the generous donations of corporate and individual sponsors and enthusiastic ticket supporters over $1 million dollars has been raised to provide academic and financial support to the recipient organizations on behalf of the students.

Now on November 23, 2015 in their fifth evening of Intentional Praise, Carla Harris and The Mark Howell Singers promise to deliver a night of handclapping, foot stomping gospel music that is sure to fill your hearts and lift your spirits. You will not leave Carnegie Hall the way you arrived.
